eIRB Replacement Project

The Office of Human Subjects Research Protections is in the process of considering alternative eIRB systems to our current system.  Over the past two years, OHSRP put in place a single, centralized IRB system and consolidated the protocols from the previous 3 electronic IRB (eIRB) submission systems into one system. The objective was to:

• Create a single, centralized IRB review structure and process that serves the entire intramural research program.
• Allow for a consistent, compliant review process for all human subjects research conducted by the intramural program.
• Create the necessary separation for a truly independent review process.

We are continually optimizing the eIRB system to better meet the needs of the research community. We have created a steering committee to gain insight from the research community, evaluate solutions and to help guide the project.

• The purpose of the project is to optimize the electronic Institutional Review Board (eIRB) protocol management system at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
• The mission of the project is to streamline the submission and review of human subjects research protocols across the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) and facilitate the documentation of regulatory compliance through implementation of a new eIRB system. This may be accomplished by continuing to optimize our current system or by seeking a replacement.
